Course | The Course is designed for professionals working in a genetic counseling setting or considering setting up a new service. It is also appropriate for professionals who need a knowledge of genetic conditions or testing for their work in other specialties, such as midwifery, paediatrics, oncology or neurology. It provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of genetic counseling for those who are relatively new to the field, but can be as a refresher course for those who are experienced. Clinical genetics, applications and use of genetic testing, counselling skills and ethical practice are topics covered by the experienced faculty in a friendly learning environment. Mendelian inheritance and non- traditional inheritance, using diagnostic tools (cytogenetics, molecular analysis, molecular cytogenetics), prenatal diagnosis, cancer genetics, pedigree taking and risk analysis, interpretation of laboratory results, genetic screening, ethical issues (including genetic testing in children), basic concepts in dysmorphology, genetics of mental retardation, medical genetics and public health, community genetics. Workshops are held to enable students to develop their counselling skills and apply them in clinical situations such as prenatal diagnosis and presymptomatic testing. |
